What if the best classroom tool for a five-year-old is one we already know?

Countries that led the world on classroom tablets are now spending real money to bring back books and handwriting in the early grades. Here's the research, presented plainly, so parents and teachers in our district can look at it together.

Writing this by hand engages motor, visual, and attention systems together — researchers call it a richer “memory trace.” Kindergartners who learn letters by handwriting them recognize more of those letters later than children who typed them.

Part one

The countries that led on tech are now pulling back

This isn't one outlier country. It's a coordinated shift among the Nordic nations most often cited internationally as models for progressive, technology-forward education.

What the research actually shows, age by age

Three consistent findings from peer-reviewed research, focused specifically on kindergarten-through-early-elementary learners — not teenagers, not adults.

Handwriting builds letters into memory

A controlled study training kindergartners on new letters found typing showed no advantage over handwriting on any measure — recognition, naming, or writing. Handwriting engages attention and motor memory that typing simply doesn't use.

Paper still beats screens for comprehension

A meta-analysis of 39 studies and 1,812 children found paper books produced higher comprehension scores than otherwise-identical digital versions — and children couldn't tell they'd understood less.

More classroom screen time, lower scores

Across 31 countries, students using computers more often at school scored lower on both reading and math. The highest-performing systems used technology more for teachers than for students.

Part three

In fairness — what the evidence doesn't show

A credible case is a complete one. Here's what we're not claiming.

noteSweden's reading decline overlaps with COVID-era learning loss and more students learning Swedish as a second language — both plausible factors separate from device use.

noteUNESCO found only about 10% of ed-tech studies reliably measure actual learning impact — a lot of the evidence on both sides is weaker than either side likes to admit.

noteWell-designed digital tools, built for pedagogy rather than engagement, have matched or outperformed print in some studies. The research supports rethinking how much and how — not banning screens outright.

Questions worth asking District 112

Framed as questions, not demands — the fastest way to find out whether this is a real disagreement or a policy nobody has revisited in years.

What research base was used when the K–2 device program was adopted, and has it been revisited since?
How much screen time does a typical kindergarten or first-grade student accumulate per day, across all apps?
Is handwriting instruction still a protected, formal part of the K–2 curriculum?
Does the district have outcome data from before and after the 1:1 device rollout in early grades?
Who owns this decision, and what's the actual process for a parent-initiated review?
Would the district consider a staged approach — paper-first in K–2, deliberate digital integration from grade 3 up?
