For kindergarten through early elementary, peer-reviewed research consistently favors handwriting and printed books over typing and classroom screens — not teenagers, not adults.
A controlled study training kindergartners on new letters found typing showed no advantage over handwriting on any measure — recognition, naming, or writing. Handwriting engages attention and motor memory that typing simply doesn't use.
A meta-analysis of 39 studies and 1,812 children found paper books produced higher comprehension scores than otherwise-identical digital versions — and children couldn't tell they'd understood less.
Across 31 countries, students using computers more often at school scored lower on both reading and math. The highest-performing systems used technology more for teachers than for students.
